Summer Plumbing Tasks

Important Spring and Summer Plumbing Tasks

Around the spring and summer months, it is a perfect time to address plumbing and maintenance. Making sure to do regular Summer plumbing tasks tasks will help prevent clogged up plumbing, clogged drains, leaky faucets and aging water heaters. This handful of plumbing-related maintenance tasks will help to ensure that your plumbing remains in good working order throughout the year.

Summer Plumbing Tasks

Check the Faucets

Check on the water pressure of your sink and bathroom faucets to make sure that you catch any problems with the pressure as low pressure could potentially indicate that you have a leak in the pipe. Run the water on both hot and cold for several minutes to make sure any air present works it’s way out of the system. This should fix any problems with your water pressure. If problems persist then it may be in your best interests to get in touch with a professional plumber to examine your system and see to any serious issues for you.

Check the Toilet

The obvious thing when it comes to plumbing is to check and maintain the status of your toilet and it’s piping to make sure it is in good working order. The toilet is the piece of plumbing that you probably use daily so it is the one you want to make sure is working as well as it can, above all the other pieces of plumbing-related equipment. Checking to make sure that your toilet does not have any leaks is extremely simple; all you need to do is to drop some food coloring into your toilet’s tank and wait to see if the water changes color. If the water stays the same then you have nothing to worry about. However, if the water does change color then you probably have a leak and need to get it taken care of as soon as you possibly can.

Flush the Water Heater

Another important thing you need to make sure to do involves the water heater. Your water heater needs to be regularly flushed as sediment and several other potentially unhealthy substances can build up in the tank which can reduce the effectiveness of your water heater in the near future and can lead to it not lasting as long as it otherwise would. To mitigate these problems, it is a good idea to remove this buildup of sediment and other substances from the heater tank while you are doing these other plumbing tasks.

Drainpipes and debris clearing

While the yard might not seem like an obvious place to be doing your plumbing work but it is actually an extremely important piece of ensuring that your drainage system remains as healthy as can be. Make sure that you use this part of your plumbing examination to make sure that you catch any debris or other residue clogging up your drain pipe so that you can get it out now and not find out that the pipe is clogged when the system completely stops draining water from your roof because the system is too clogged to work properly.

While some of these activities are something that you can do yourself, you will sometimes want to have plumbing company you trust help you with them just to ensure that you have effectively completed them and are not inadvertently leaving something unfinished. Doing your plumbing work yourself may be cheaper but it is always best to have a professional look at your plumbing system at least once per year just in case you are missing something that could cause the price of fixing a future problem to skyrocket if that problem isn’t addressed now.
