New York plumbing problems are more than just an inconvenience, they can cause a great deal of damage to your home as well as connecting units. To avoid future problems, it is imperative that you take care of any problem as fast as possible. Here are three common New York plumbing problems (low water pressure, leaky faucets, clogged drains) and what you can do to take care of them.
Low Water Pressure
When you turn on a faucet or shower that usually has strong water flow and you only get a trickle, you’ve got a water pressure problem. For sudden changes in water pressure, contact a licensed plumber immediately. You could have a serious predicament such as a broken water main. Broken water mains when left unchecked, could cause significant damage to your home. Often water pressure problems come on slowly, indicating build-up of deposits and sediments on the faucet aerator. Remove the aerator and drop it in a small bowl of white vinegar and leave it overnight to soak. The same technique is used for the shower head by putting vinegar in a plastic bag, wrapping it around the showerhead and letting it soak. If this does not solve the water pressure problem, call a plumber to assess the situation.
Leaky Faucets
It is not only annoying to hear a drip coming from a faucet, but it is also incredibly wasteful. Hundreds of gallons of water can make their way through a small leak, one drip at a time. If you have a traditional faucet with turn handles, the problem is most likely worn out washers, which can be easy to replace. If you have a lever style faucet, it uses a ceramic disc or canister and replacing it should be handled by a professional. Another typical leak spot is around the base of the faucet. If this is the case, you will have to turn off the water, dismantle the faucet and replace either o-ring or the entire faucet. If you do not feel comfortable doing the repairs yourself, or you do not have the proper tools, call New York plumbers like Kew Forest Plumbing and we will fix it for you. It will be faster, and the job will be done right.
Clogged Drains
A clogged drain usually means that there is a build-up of some sort within the pipes immediately under the sink or tub. The first step is to use a plunger to try to clear the clog to restore proper flow. This will take a bit of elbow grease. If this technique does not work, you may want to try a liquid drain cleaner. Sometimes, no matter what you do, you cannot get the water to go down the drain. At this point, we recommend you call a licensed plumber to address the issue. Often, they will use what is referred to as a snake to get down deep into the drain pipes to remove the blockage.
